BKM2025 Welcome Dinner: A Cultural Immersion Night

The temptation to be a cultural impostor
was strong.

Yet, I triumphed over the urge on April 18 when I showed up for the welcome dinner for full and half marathoners of Bukidnon International Marathon 2025 (BKM2025) in Kaamulan Open Theatre.

Despite my heartfelt liking for the different Mindanao traditional costumes during Buwan Ng Wika celebration in the school where I am affiliated with, I didn't want to put myself in an awkward situation wherein I would be recognized as a native and then be talked to in Bisaya based on the attire which I could have worn.

Initially, I tried researching about the Bicol regional clothing since the announcement clearly stated "Whatever attire from your region or ethnicity." It was my first time to look for another symbol associated with Region V, but I found none. Thus, it was a safe decision to come in formal wear which was one of the recommended outfits for the occasion.

After the registration near the entrance, I excitedly approached two well-dressed charming usherettes whom I asked if I could have photos with. I immediately felt their warmth and hospitality.

Spotting a vacant seat near a female runner, I decided to join her. Her amiable smile promised a very enjoying evening's camaraderie. The talkative person in me initiated the conversation. Then, her companion came. My intuition that Sheila and Ivy, both first time 21-km runners from Cagayan De Oro City, would turn my first night in Malaybalay City noteworthy didn't fail me.

The grazing tables were already open, but I had my late brunch at the hotel upon my arrival from an almost four-hour trip from Laguindingan Airport so I still felt full. Besides, a vibrant atmosphere was enough to make me feel stuffed. Before 6:30pm, the program commenced.

Dramatically, Bukidnon culture unfolded before my eyes. The traditional music and dances created a powerful multi-sensory experience for me. I love the unique and beautiful fusion of indigenous melodies. I wallowed in the intense happiness and exhilaration the different cultural performances of these talented people evoked. Truly, it was immersive!

Not to miss in this milestone were the traditional costumes, which I learned represented the diverse cultures of Bukidnon's seven tribes (Talaandig, Higa-onon, Bukidnon, Manobo, Matigsalug, Tigwahanon, and Umayamnon). They were a sight to behold! I took profound satisfaction admiring the intricate embroidery, beadwork, and unique headwear. The welcome dinner was the perfect catwalk to showcase the region's rich cultural heritage. Indeed, it was an evening of elegance and pride.

What a blast! I couldn’t contain my joy. Here I am in Northern Mindanao which I had finally discovered to be a safe and awe-inspiring place to visit. If not for Bukidnon International Marathon 2025, I wouldn’t be able to convince my family especially my husband that our impression about this second largest island in the Philippines must be changed.

Before 9:00pm, Sheila and Ivy left ahead since they would still go home to Cagayan De Oro. Their parting words for me felt like we’ve known each other for long.

Alone, I kept enjoying the program. I did not stop myself again from participating in the community traditional dance. These snaps succeeded in capturing the beauty of this fellowshipping with like-minded individuals.

Great food! Great people! Great running community!

These were the things that revved me up despite being in Malaybalay City for roughly three hours. From the posting of the welcome dinner invite, I confirmed my attendance at once for this would not only delight me during my stay but would educate me as well. That's why when I was faced with a slight rub regarding transportation in going to the venue before 6:00pm, I had to find a way.

Naniniwala ako sa kasabihan "Kapag nagigipit, sa motorsiklo kumakapit! Kesehodang naka-bestida at takong." (I believe in the saying "When in a pickle, hold on to a motorbike despite wearing a dress and high heels!") Hahahahaha...
